I’ve always wondered why people get upset over a woman breastfeeding.
Before kids, I never had a feeling one way or the other. I was never ‘Pro-Cover’ or ‘Anti-Cover’. I was never ‘Keep at Home’ or ‘Find Somewhere Discreet if You Must’. I never really cared.
So now that I am a mother to an earth baby, I’m…well, tickled pink.
My reaction is to this article. For those too lazy to click, there was a small uproar over a woman breastfeeding her two-year-old daughter.
When I was pregnant with Bo, I never had any set limits as to how long I was going breastfeed. I know it was going to be exclusively for the first six (ended up being seven) months but after that, it was up in the air. To be clear, I’m not anti-formula nor do I look down on those who have to use it. But the goal was to always produce enough milk so I wouldn’t have to use formula.
Lately, I’ve been getting some pushback because I’m still nursing Bo at 11 months old. It was shocking to see the pushback were from two dear people – my best friend, who just happens to be a male; and my mother.
I received the typical comments: ‘he’s getting to be too big’, ‘he’s going to be too dependent’, ‘you don’t need to breastfeed anymore.’ And my reaction to each of the comments was just this one line:
Why do you care? They’re not your boobs.
(Okay, so that’s two lines but you get what I’m saying…)
It’s interesting…as a society we have limits on what is acceptable. You will often hear people saying, ‘I support breastfeeding but/until…’ Well, no. You don’t support breastfeeding if you put a limit on it. Furthermore, you shouldn’t dictate how a woman is caring for her child if she is providing food from a natural source. Just be glad she is feeding her child, unlike some parents.
I plan to breastfeed Bo at least until he’s one, possibly two years of age. If anyone has a problem with it, I only have one piece of advice – just don’t look.
(Also, if you wonder why I chose this particular song for this post, just listen to the lyrics. 🙂 )
